Scenario Overview

Critical infrastructure — data centers, power control systems, emergency communications, financial networks — cannot tolerate single points of failure. A single cable cut or equipment failure must not cause system-wide outage.

Dual-route fiber backbone design provides physical path redundancy: two independent cable routes between each critical node, using different physical paths, different conduits, and ideally different geographic corridors.

Physical Path Diversity Requirement

True redundancy requires physically diverse routes — not just two cables in the same conduit. Routes must be separated to prevent a single incident (excavation, fire, flood) from affecting both paths.

Implementation Requirements

  • Map all critical nodes and identify primary and secondary route options
  • Ensure primary and secondary routes use different physical paths and conduits
  • Use high-fiber-count armored cable (48-144F) for both primary and secondary routes
  • Install automatic optical switching equipment for sub-second failover
  • Conduct regular OTDR testing on both routes to detect degradation before failure
  • Document and physically label both routes clearly for emergency maintenance
